Michelle A. Dowell-Vest is a writer, community reporter, and random ranter. She is the creator of A Gurlz Guide and Podcaster with The Back2Us Radio Network. Both of these organizations are rooted in the belief that healing happens in community rather than in solitude, and that having space for our voice is liberating to both self and community.
In January 2016, she is launching CitiNOOKS.com. CitiNOOKS marries what she loves, what she wants to do more of, and what she is passionate about: Writing, travel, and inspiring others. CitiNOOKS.com is an online travel agency and magazine focused on inspiring others to travel more and often. Afterall, the world is expecting us.
More important than what she does is who she is. Michelle is the wife to Terésa Dowell-Vest, mother to three adults, and nona to six perfect grand babies. She strives to live a life of transparency, compassion, and intersectionality.
Michelle has always been an overcomer. Her life started with the adversity of, being born to an absent father and a drug addicted mother and having to face the unique challenges that came with being tossed from one foster home to another. Triumphant over physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, she learned she has the power to heal and transform her life. When she grew tired of repeating the same destructive patterns of toxic relationships, she committed to the difficult road of emotional healing and declared that she was not a victim.
In her healing, Michelle learned that life is a constant flow of change, and that in order to overcome adversity in a healthy way, one has to understand the ebb and flow of loss, grief, love, and joy. Life’s a balancing act that can be amazing if we make the choice to invest in our healing, to harness the power of our intuition, and to understand the value in the collective energy of the community around us.

In her book, The Empowered Whistleblower: A Practical and Spiritual Path to Personal Power, Dawn Westmoreland shares her story of overcoming her own dis-empowerment. In life, even negative experiences can be a gift in ugly wrapping paper as long as you find the lesson or growth in each one. Throughout her life, Dawn has blown the “whistle” on disempowerment in many forms and is now teaching others, as a speaker, author, coach, and hypnotherapist, how to step up and break the chains that keep them from attaining their personal power.
Dawn has been featured in numerous radio and magazine interviews, where she has shared empowerment strategies with those who want more joy and fulfillment in their lives. Dawn Marie Westmoreland has been lauded by the Christian Science Monitor for her work to empower others and alert the federal government to her managers’ actions at the VA she once worked at, alleging favoritism for hiring and training that advanced only a select few.

Allow me to provide some background about us. We met the summer of 2002 and fell into a swift, comfortable, and gentle friendship. To describe the manner in which we met cannot be left to just a paragraph. Many say this, and we will as well; our union was 110 percent destiny—the night we met, a greater force touched and brought us together. We remained friends, though miles apart, after I had moved to another state the year after we met. In 2009, after years of supporting one another through life’s ups and downs, we took our friendship to another level, to a place that far exceeds what either of us had imagined love to be. We committed our love on July 14, 2012, in an intimate ceremony in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We were legally married July 14, 2013, in Studio City, California. We have three daughters whom we love dearly. Brandy Nasha resides in Los Angeles, CA

Entrepreneur, underwriter, author
A native of Atlanta, April resides in the city’s historic WestLake/Mozley Park area with her daughter and fur babies. She is humbled and proud to have taken on the task of owning and renovating the nearly eighty-year old home her grandfather built for her grandmother. April is a proud and loud advocate for middle-class African Americans stepping up to the challenges of re- gentrifying historically black communities and proudly becoming the new faces of urban pioneering. To that end, she smiles a little deeper each time she’s questioned about her love of gardening, her desire to raise chickens, her longing for pygmy goats, and how that fits in a community barely two miles from the heart of downtown Atlanta. That’s when she knows she’s not speaking with a generational native; natives know just how well the old communities can sustain an urban farmer.
After more than twenty years in the corporate arena, and over a decade of owning her own business services company, TigerWolf, Inc., April is very proud to be a life and disability underwriter for one of the largest insurance providers in the country. She sees her job as not only a beautiful homage to her love of sociology and statistics, but also a lifelong commitment to social justice and community work as well. Helping small companies provide resources for their employees at critical moments has become its own reward. April looks forward to the very near future when she can return to her alma mater, Agnes Scott College, and finish her Bachelors of Science in Sociology and later pursue her masters. She’s contemplating another bachelors degree in culinary arts, since ultimately plans to run a bed and breakfast in the metro area serving up the dishes her friends, family, and clients regularly request.
While she has been in and out of the local open mic/poetry scene for the past fifteen years, it’s her cookbooks that keep those who know of them requesting a publishing date. Within the next year, April hopes to publish the first in a series of five. She will also be a contributor in a yet untitled anthology spearheaded by the unconquerable Claudia Moss. She is still in a state of shock to be included in such an incredible collaboration with the diverse and inspiring group of women contributing to this compilation.
Allie Greene graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelors of Arts in Studio Art.
